Deploying Responsible AI

AI adoption is outpacing governance. This paper addresses what responsible deployment actually requires in practice: not aspirations, but structures.

Large language models and AI-powered automation have moved into production across industries at a pace that has outrun the governance frameworks designed to manage them. Organisations that moved fast have captured capability advantages. Many are now managing the consequences of insufficient oversight.

Responsible AI deployment requires governance structures, risk assessment processes, and human oversight mechanisms that transform AI adoption from a technology project into a managed business capability. The author draws on the EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF, and emerging US federal guidance throughout.

“The gap between an organisation’s AI aspirations and its governance readiness is not a technology problem. It is a leadership problem.”

Published in ISACA Journal, Volume 1, 2024, the article addresses a question that remains urgent: not whether to deploy AI, but how to do it in a way that an organisation can stand behind when things go wrong.
